Women's self help group

0:13-0:27

discussion and a.lokam / A.'s world by a dalit woman:

First a woman from M. comments ... Schulze: „Did she ever go to dalit women's location?“ "No"... several women commenting, P. and Suresh translate, one dalit woman feels uneasy because the film was not ... really 'finished': morning to evening

(poor) women are not mobile beyond their home & job

0:16

...somehow the film not perfect ...

Schulze: precise impressions about film? Suresh sums up: „..they wanted to add something ... and then there is some discussion about DWS ... how do they communicate ...

-> the woman 'director' was basically very happy with film

women’s critique

women could not show in film all they had in mind

0:25

Schulze: should they have shown the main woman ... in the whole day chronology? - about problems with short films, how time is condensed in films, space changed, etc.

sinima philosophy: ‚film time’ is con- densed ‚real time’

0:27-0:32

l. lokam/ L.'s world - a woman from M.

0:32

discussion: women sitting on the ground talking, Suresh translates, Sarat asks them details about their lives ...

0:34-0:36

Suma Josson contributes something on the specific difficulties of documentary film making with small budgets, etc. [difficult to understand]

difficulties of documentary film making

0:37-0:40

E. kutumbam/ E.'s family [while watching the women are more relaxed, laughing]

0:40

B.Schulze and the whole crew in this film faced real problems because it became late and dark, and there was no electricity ... „she was really in the fields ... and then she came in the evening, had to clean… and within 5 minutes they had to have breakfast and supper…” ... discussion

poor houses without electricity

0:43-0:45

Suma Josson

0:45

Schulze: do women of M. get a feeling for dalit women's location via the films? women's discussion =

films able to transmit locations' atmospheres?

Suresh translates: Dalit women's films focus on family, M.- films on women's organisation and local people ...?

women in different locations make different films

0:47-0:49

V. lokam/ V.'s world

0:49-1:00

discussion ...Suresh translates: about this M2 woman's film, they find it good: what is 'realistic'/ not realistic?

Schulze: explains filmmaking: e.g. instead of clock they show sun etc. to indicate time ... cinema works with allusions ...Suma: M2's husband the "first husband I see doing this helping in the kitchen etc., women react amused

women’s under-standing of 'realism'

women amused

women appreciate husband in kitchen

0:55

women listening to Suresh: in documentary films there are contradictions like in real life ... Schulze: media are creative but can create wrong impressions, too

sinima philosophy:

how films manipulate ‚reality’

0:57

-> danger of manipulation, wrong context of images

1:00

picture: Schulze

1:01-1:03

anukamba/ Compassion by a Dalit woman

1:03-1:15

discussion:[rather lively] Suresh: „... two ways of services in different churches...  Schulze: „...she explained what is in CMS church, and how it is in the other church, differences … this problem that poor children even feel their poverty in their humble baptism …Suresh translates: there should be people in the neighbourhood helping …

CMS Dalit church

- still as poor person one is second class

- there should be more neighbour-hood support

1:16-1:19

picture and sound: daughters of M. women singing duet

1:20-1:23

nangalude kutumbam/ our family by a dalit woman

1:24-1:34

discussion ... Schulze: do M.-women see similar problems, e.g. unemployment? Suresh translates: the problem is different ... -> if unemployed one should look for new job, D1 folds paper bags at home ... credits are not easily accessible ... specially for dalit women

poor women’s problems:

- unemployment

- self employment

1:35

watching Suma Josson's SAREE (evening)

SAREE

1:36

picture: final credits (Malayalam)

1:36-2:24

10.03.2002, (morning session) discussion on SAREE

women sitting in circle, Suma Josson speaks on her film,

we are having a very fruitful and deep discussion because the women feel that this film is unusually addressing their live experiences, they feel the closeness of themselves to the film characters, the relevance of the film's humanist message to their lives, they were deeply moved

poor women discuss SAREE with Suma

protocol >>

Ø      feel touched

Ø      like friendship

Ø      life&death

Ø      mother-daughter

2:24-2:27

film by a dalit woman ente swapnangal/ My dreams

discussion ... Schulze: „...say something about idea of a dalit woman to establish a computer centre at her location ... for local women/ people“

poor women and computer

2:31-2:38

S. lokam/ S.'s film

2:38-2:51

discussion ...  Schulze: who runs the canteen together with M2? Suesh translates: the canteen runs with „loss“, because lesser students at university, less seminars, the influence of the strike, and more women are also cooking for students

poor women’s prob- lem: self-employ- ment aggravates competition

2:51-2:54

V. lokam/ V.'s world

2:54

discussion ... Schulze tells her experiences while being the camera woman: the women in Kurichy appear to be more mobile than the women in Mallussery …-> field, office, … less things to survive, no space at home, too, more outside ..

Suresh translates: in Mallussery the women are also work-ing in the fields, men go, but they didn't show it in films ...

poor women’s mobility

3:03

Schulze: if there are difference between the two locations, why is that so? I do not want to judge, just to know.

3:04

Suma Josson: when for the first time I made films ... [hard to understand] Schulze: why are M.- women in their films seen more in/ around their houses? ...

3:08-3:13

3:13-4:03

Evaluation of the Ente lokam-project: all the women feel by film making their awareness was extended, to Suma Josson: „more conscious.., aware of things… ways to change ...”

But one riddle is pondered about very seriously: all women face severe problems - also within and from family - but they didn't address it, why?

Ente lokam enten-ded poor women's awareness, but

they realised that they do not feel free to address their real problems ...

3:58

Schulze asking Suma Josson about her opinion ... Suma Josson: in the case of ... most of films unveil this role playing of women, of men ... due to patriarchy ...”

M3 says to Suma Josson: film-making is a very "easy thing" Suma tells about her enormous difficulties with SAREE,

poor women find sinima "easy", but future film making should address also problems

4:00

Schulze playfully replies to M3 that and why film-making is indeed made very difficult, but that it had been part of her strategy to made it appear easy to the women

(end of workshop)

Inter-View between D6 and B. Schulze

10.03.2003, Inter-View between a young dalit woman in her end twenties and B. Schulze, (just sound) about women’s sinima, about police attack on the adivasis struggling for land at Muthanga

D6's views on sinima, on Muthanga etc protocol >>

4:03

Schulze: yesterday meeting with DWS-women „which purpose“ and relation to our workshop on 08.03.03?

D6: last weeek 2 days before workshop „friends came we shared our feelings on adivasi issue ... we couldn´t even discuss, just shared our feelings … as well with male friend .. shared also … all we talked to felt suffering, this type of feeling last 2-3 weeks…knowing by newspaper readings….

They also think, if it is we instead of adivasi – what is our stand? Then, what will be our situation?”

Schulze: asking about source of information on killed Adivasi. D6: “..newspaper.. last 2-3 weeks all people especially women are reading newspapers...”

-> people speaking even during harvest „this time even in the field, the women are talking about these problems... sharing their feeling....

Muthanga shocked the dalits, made them think, speak amongst each other, discuss newspapers

Ø      deep fear

Ø      will we dalits be the next target?

4:11

Schulze: “what was new for you as information in Saratchandran’s film?” (EVICTED FROM JUSTICE)

EVICTED FROM JUSTICE

4:12

D6: brutality of police ... Schulze: which papers did you read? D6: Malayalam Manorama, Mathrubhoomi

police brutality

4:13

D6: „A journalist was beaten up, police was taking...

...adivasi were not provoking police ... also hurting women with this women police. This is also a very brutal thing .. cruel hurting children also...they also make a martyr of him ... they could have helped him instead ...

this was the background ... we arranged our meeting on 09.03. -> 19 women came, even those who had been absent for long

police atrocities

women shocked about brutality also of women police

poor dalit women compassionate with adivasi experience

4:18

Schulze: you know so much already, has this film changed your feelings?

4:20

D6: „I feel it is our experience“ ...it is also our problem… Schulze: what if police would act again like that time during 2000-01 when there was an agitation for dalit people's rights in our location?

dalit women feel dalits-adivasis face similar problems

4:21

D6: 1995 there were riots between Dalit and Ezhava community (low caste which had struggled and won more social mobility against the rigid casteism)  „2-3 months our men couldn´t go to work… to every house the police came ... there were no men in the house … just women and children ....we women of DWS started a peace rally, only women participating and after 3 months all the men walked behind this, no riots anymore…”

Dalit – Ezhava riots

Dalit women’s peace initiative was successful

4:24

Schulze: “.. what about the issue the dalits fought for?”

D6: “ … at that time I was invited on a church study tour to Germany … problems with police ... getting the certificate because I am from a so-called notorious location ...

... but then I got a passport...

police harass dalits because they are dalits

4:27

Schulze: ….sensitising the community: what happened at Muthanga does concern us, too...? -> which reactions at meeting of dalit women?

D6: „...they are all ...alerted during the last 2-3 weeks..

- first reaction to our awareness building: women were upset: “it is too late … should have been done before..” (adivasi solidarity)  Schulze: How do women feels towards Janu: “…she has decision power, energy … they all feel positive towards Janu, they don´t like woman politicians like Padmaja ...”

people react too late against state-violence >>

Janu vs. Padmaja>

4:34

Schulze: “.. all women feel close/ friendly to Janu?”

D6: “Yes. They all want to see Sarat's documentary as well… we also passed last week's newspapers to read”

Schulze: “What happens now could really be a turning point to everyone?”

dalit women admire C.K. Janu

4:36-4:38 (end)

D6: “..one of my neighbours asked me, wanted to share, about the Kutumbasree (state women's programme) they feel the same as we dalit women that there we never experience this sharing… Kutumbasree is not for women…

state women’s programmes (Ku-tumbasree) are a farce

[Transcript of ca. 60 seconds of interview did not fit on DV-XI, only on mother tape DV mini]

D6: „All Kutumbasree sessions are like this: waste of time, no results for women from Kutumbasree.”

Kutumbasree no improvement

Schulze: Maybe they collect these signatures for moving the state to provide a new public water tap? (irony)

D6: “That´s why we showed this being a farce in our film KUDIYIRAKKAPPEDUNAVAR ... Schulze: .. the women cannot expect betterment in their lives now ... D6: That´s why we included it that way. There are no real discussions in Kutumbasree. Schulze:…only formulas … D6: The Government says this Kutumbasree is for women's empowerment,  what type of empowerment !?…

Schulze;: ..Ya, ... it´s only a ritual ... D6: It is also not economic ... Schulze: Yeah.
